Hi, warm greetings from I wish to Travel

US travel docs:

US travel docs is one great source to get an in depth, updated information about getting US visa and all related details (requirements, application process, rules & regulations, what is acceptable/what is not and lot more).

I have been to US a couple of times and can tell you with surety that US immigration (or visa system) does not discriminate about ‘type’ of your accommodation arrangements as long as details of your stay are in good order.

By good order, I mean, address of the establishment you are going to stay, their telephone and fax no. email address, copy of the confirmation along with a confirmed check-in/check-out dates.

Above details are required for both, paid and free accommodations. Paid ones are usually hotels, hostels, b&b, apartment-share etc. and free ones are usually referred to staying with your friends, relatives and in this case, at a workaway host.

Further, in case of a free accommodation, you may need a proper letter from your host (addressed to US Embassy/Consulate in your city) specifying or declaring your stay arrangements with them. They shall first mention their social security no. or other legal ID to authenticate that they are US citizen and then declare details of sponsoring your stay with them. They may also need to mention taking full responsibility of you in case something goes wrong (health, finance, safety, legal issues).

Summarizing above and in relation to your question; Yes, Indians can visit US as a workaway on a tourist visa (provided above documentations are in proper order).

Workaway International:

Workaway is an international organisation and hospitality service that enable travelers willing to work as volunteers to contact hosts (who can be individuals, families or groups) wanting help with their projects or activities. Volunteers or ‘Workawayers’, are expected to contribute a pre-agreed amount of time per day in exchange for lodging and food provided by their host.

To be on a safer side and save yourself from hassle, contact US consulate in your area through email or in-person and get it double checked. In most probability, they will tell what I have mentioned above.
